Improving your home environment: A guide to mental well-being

The world is constantly changing, and the closer technology has brought different worlds closer, the busier we have gotten. While attempting to keep up with the pace, our minds are strained and exposed to stress from school, work, and social engagements. Home is a last resort for many people to find tranquillity, a much-needed escape, and rejuvenation.

It is no surprise that our surrounding environment and mental well-being are interconnected. Our homes contribute significantly to our moods, appetite, memory, creativity, and spiritual well-being. Homes, therefore, are indeed an extension of personality - an identity. How, then, can someone ensure their well-being is catered for?

Here are some tips for improving your home environment.

1. Declutter and embrace neatness

A cluttered and untidy home environment induces a feeling of overwhelm and anxiety. Subconsciously, our mind registers an incomplete project underway and adds it to another list of

tasks on to planned for the day. A tidy environment invokes an emotion of calm and control that rubs your daily mood.

  • Kick off your day by making the bed and tidying up the bedroom.

  • Schedule laundry days - neatly fold dirty clothes and place them in the basket.

  • Wash the dishes and clean up the kitchen after dinner.

  • Get organized - ensure everything is stored in the appropriate area.

  • Donate clothes, toys, home care products, and equipment you have overgrown or are out of commission. Free yourself from old baggage.

  • Draft a to-do list for the next day before sleeping. You will be energized to start a new day with a settled mind and purpose.

2. Engage your senses

Lighting, temperature, smell, and color influence psychological responses. A dark and dull room brings about laziness or reduced motivation. While a foul odor and harsh lighting cause agitation.

  • One may increase productivity or pleasure by painting cool or warm colors in their bedroom, living room, and kitchen. For instance, warm colors - yellow and orange evoke happiness, and cool colors - blue and purple hint at tranquillity or royalty.

  • Clean your garbage disposal to remove stale stinks in your kitchen using scented soap. Sprinkle some baking powder in the trash can to neutralize the stench.

  • Light up scented candles in different rooms to the aroma of your choosing.

  • Consider being a plant parent. Indoor plants clean the air while adding beauty to your

  • Increase natural light by not blocking the windows with furniture or curtains. Keep your

  • Add extra blankets or fans to self-regulate the temperature.

3. Create an unrestricted environment

A free home environment and an open concept affect creativity. A simple furniture arrangement can encourage interaction and meaningful conversations. Soft pillows and throw cushions are cozy and allow one to let their guard down and speak freely.

Find a place for everything - identify areas dedicated to working, playing, and resting in your home. Distractions will be less frequent, and it helps to focus on one thing at a time.

4. Location matters - opt for a home close to nature

Spending time in nature - ecotherapy has proven to help with mild to moderate depression.

  • Living near a green park or forest can motivate you to keep fit. Studies show that a simple run or walk through a natural environment is more stimulating than in urban surroundings.

  • Being outdoors boosts energy and lowers stress levels.

  • Nature is eye-appealing and peaceful. It can inspire or enhance creativity and better

5. Connect and get social.

Humans are social beings. We seek to connect socially at an individual and community level. Otherwise, feelings of isolation could arise. Therefore, living in a neighborhood that connects with your culture and values is beneficial. Join local neighborhood associations, volunteer for community projects or host game nights.

6. Family matters

If living alone or with your family, keep memorabilia such as photos, collectibles, and albums as mementos. A source of inspiration or caution through different life experiences can provide much-needed guidance.

7. Challenge yourself

Break the monotony of the everyday routine by learning a new skill or adopting a pet.

Learning a new skill can assist in boosting mental well-being. One gets to connect with new people, build a sense of purpose and raise self-confidence. It could be working on a DIY project, learning new recipes, or joining a dance club after school or work. Anything that allows one to be present at the moment is a healthy way to find purpose.

Caring for pets like dogs and cats can help relieve stress, anxiety, and depressed moods. Playing with a pet also raises feel-good brain chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin.

For a long time, issues of mental well-being have often been overlooked. Its conditions are complex and multi-causal. There's an opportunity, however, for one to tend to their immediate environment as part of personal care.
